Which year groups can I generate Shine Interventions reports for?
Currently our Shine Intervention Reports can only be generated for Years 1-6, not Reception.
The reports use both new and old PiRA, PUMA and/or NTS Assessments and GAPs to reliably assess pupils’ termly attainment in reading and maths, the Shine reports in MARK will then allow you to access the suggested learning sequences.
How are the recommendations calculated?
Shine Maths:
The questions in each test are analysed and divided into Areas of Learning. So, for example: there are 7 questions that fall under the area of learning: written addition and subtraction. If the student scores less than 50% for those 7 questions, an intervention is suggested.
Shine Reading Skills:
The questions in each test are analysed and divided into Areas of Learning The reports then identify pupils who made more errors in an Area of Learning than 50%+ of pupils in the cohort of pupils whose results were used to standardise the tests. In this way, it identifies pupils whose performance is in the bottom 40–50% of each cohort.
For example: there are 10 questions that fall under the Area of Learning: Retrieval. The total number of questions that 55% or more of the sample got correct for Retrieval is then took this away from the overall total. If there were 10 marks available and 55% or more pupils got 6 questions right, then an intervention would be recommended for pupils who got 4 or more marks incorrect.
Shine GPS:
The questions in each test are analysed and divided into Areas of Learning The reports then identify pupils who made more errors in an Area of Learning than 50%+ of pupils in the cohort of pupils whose results were used to standardise the tests. In this way, it identifies pupils whose performance is in the bottom 40–50% of each cohort.
For example: there are 10 marks that fall under the Area of Learning: Grammar. The total number of marks that 55% or more of the sample got correct for Grammar is then taken away from the overall total. If there were 10 marks available and 55% or more pupils got 6 questions right, then an intervention would be recommended for pupils who got 4 or more marks incorrect.

Which assessments can I use with Shine Interventions?
Teachers can use both new and old PiRA, PUMA, GAPS and/or NTS Assessments to reliably assess pupils’ termly attainment in reading, GPS and maths. Based on the results from these assessments, you can generate the Shine reports in MARK that will allow you to access the suggested learning sequences.
Why is there no data in my Shine Interventions report?
There must be data in your MARK system to enable any reports to be generated. Before trying to create a Shine report, make sure that you have added marks into the relevant marksheets for the tests you are using to assess your pupils.
See our article on Tips and best practices for using marksheets for further information.
